Day 9—Healthy (baking) substitutions November 24, 2009

Would you believe you can lose weight and still enjoy baked goods?

What do butter and applesauce have in common? Nothing, you say? Think again! You can substitute fruit purees such as applesauce and prune puree for some of the fat (read: butter) in your recipes, and still enjoy yummy baked treats!

Thanksgiving Bonanza: Depending on the taste you want, you can substitute applesauce, prune or pumpkin puree or mashed bananas for half the butter in your baking recipes.

Check out the comparisons (per cup):

Butter= 1,627 calories, 184 g fat

Shortening=1,845 calories, 205 g fat

Oil=1,927 calories, 218 g fat

Applesauce, unsweetened=105 calories, 0 fat, 28 carbs

Applesauce, sweetened=194 calories, 0 fat, 51 carbs

    Thanks for getting me hooked on Sparkpeople! I’ve been tracking my calories for two weeks now and it’s really helped keep me in check – except for Thanksgiving, of course! Tomorrow’s weigh-in time so we’ll see how I did last week….
